Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

Application process

Before application (before submitting EOI)

You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect to inform the Australian Government that you wish to apply for the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189). If you need assistance with your EOI submission, Shanovia can guide you through the process and help ensure that your application is prepared correctly. Your nominated occupation must be listed on the eligible skilled occupation list for the Subclass 189 visa.

You should obtain a positive skills assessment before receiving an invitation to apply. In addition, you must score at least 65 points in the points test and satisfy all other eligibility requirements for the visa.

Submit EOI

The EOI is submitted through SkillSelect and can be lodged from within or outside Australia. There is no government fee for submitting an EOI because it is not a visa application. Your points score will be assessed based on the claims made in your EOI.

Receiving an invitation to apply

If your points score is competitive and places are available for your nominated occupation, you may receive an invitation to apply for the Subclass 189 Visa.

Gathering documentation

You must provide all required documents to support the claims made in your EOI and demonstrate that you meet the eligibility requirements.

Visa application

After receiving an invitation, you can lodge your visa application online through your ImmiAccount from within or outside Australia.

After application

The Department of Home Affairs will notify you after receiving your application. You may be asked to provide additional documents or pay any applicable visa charges. The final decision will be communicated to you in writing.

189 Visa processing time

The processing time for the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) depends on several factors, including the completeness of your application, verification of your supporting documents, and how quickly you respond to any requests for additional information.

On average, Subclass 189 visa applications are commonly processed within 7 to 9 months, although individual processing times may vary.
